**New Delhi, April 4, 2025** – The Indian government has expressed serious concern over over 2,400 reported incidents targeting minorities in Bangladesh between August 5, 2024, and March 23, 2025. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh revealed this information in a written response to a Rajya Sabha query on Thursday.
While the Bangladeshi government announced the arrest of 70 individuals in connection with 88 cases in December 2024, subsequent investigations verified only 1,254 incidents. However, India now possesses updated information indicating a significantly higher number of minority-related incidents.
Mr. Singh stated that India expects Bangladesh to conduct thorough investigations into all reported incidents, bringing perpetrators of violence, arson, and killings to justice without resorting to politically motivated justifications. This expectation was reiterated during a February 16 meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser, Md. Touhid Hossain. The Indian government maintains that the primary responsibility for protecting the lives and liberties of all Bangladeshi citizens, including minorities, rests with the Bangladeshi government. India has previously raised this issue with Bangladesh on multiple occasions.
