Thu Apr 03 09:32:29 UTC 2025: ## China Vows Retaliation Against New US Tariffs, Warning of Global Economic Damage

**Beijing, China** – China has strongly condemned the latest round of US tariffs, vowing to implement countermeasures to protect its economic interests. The Commerce Ministry released a statement Thursday denouncing the tariffs as violations of international trade rules, accusing the US of “unilateral bullying” and harming global economic development.

US President Donald Trump imposed a 10% tariff on imports from numerous countries, alongside significantly higher tariffs specifically targeting key trading partners, including a 34% levy on Chinese goods – on top of a 20% tariff imposed last month. These actions, according to Beijing, ignore the benefits the US has reaped from international trade and disregard years of multilateral trade negotiations.

China has already responded with retaliatory tariffs of up to 15% on US agricultural products such as soybeans, pork, and chicken. The escalating trade war threatens China’s economic recovery, which is already facing challenges from a property sector debt crisis and weak consumer spending. The country’s export-driven growth, which saw record highs in 2024, is now jeopardized.

While the US claims its tariffs are reciprocal, China argues that the administration’s justifications are based on exaggerated estimates of tariffs imposed on US imports by other nations. The statement urged dialogue and cooperation, asserting that protectionism and trade wars ultimately benefit no one. The US has also imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, although China, while the world’s leading steel producer, is not a major exporter of the product to the US. The situation highlights the growing tensions between the world’s two largest economies and the potential for widespread global economic consequences.
