Fri Apr 04 02:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Unexpected Rainfall Brings Relief to Tamil Nadu After Heatwave

**Chennai, April 4, 2025** – Tamil Nadu experienced a surprising shift in weather conditions yesterday, with widespread rainfall across most districts, including Chennai and its suburbs, following a week of intense summer heat. The rainfall varied from light showers to moderate downpours, with some areas experiencing heavy rainfall. The unexpected showers brought a welcome respite, significantly reducing the impact of the heatwave.

The Chennai Meteorological Department attributed the rainfall to a low-pressure system over the southeast Arabian Sea and south Kerala. Their forecast predicts light to moderate rain, with thunderstorms and strong winds (30-40 km/h), in several areas from April 4th to 6th. Lighter showers are anticipated on April 7th and 8th.

However, the forecast also warns of heavy rainfall in several districts today, April 4th. The districts expected to be affected include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, and Thiruvarur. Similar heavy rainfall is predicted tomorrow in specific mountainous regions of Coimbatore, along with Nilgiris, Erode, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Salem districts.

Chennai and its suburbs are expected to experience partly cloudy skies today with a possibility of light showers.

Yesterday’s 24-hour rainfall recorded the highest precipitation in Sivagiri, Tenkasi district (11 cm), followed by Tondi (Ramanathapuram) and Thirumangalam (Madurai) with 9 cm each. Several other locations reported significant rainfall, indicating the widespread nature of the unexpected downpour. The change in weather provides much-needed relief after a period of scorching temperatures.
