**Shimla, India –** Construction has begun on Asia’s longest and the world’s second-largest ropeway system in Shimla, India. The ambitious Tara Devi-Shimla Ropeway Project, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the Himachal Pradesh government, will cost ₹1,734.40 crore (approximately $210 million USD). Funded largely by the New Development Bank (80%), the project aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and boost tourism in the popular hill station.
The 13.79-kilometer ropeway will connect 15 key stations, including Maa Tara Devi, the ISBT, the railway station, and the IGMC Hospital, covering a broader area of approximately 60 kilometers. With 660 cabins each carrying 8-10 passengers, the system will transport approximately 2,000 people per hour in each direction, with cabins arriving at stations every two to three minutes. The project also incorporates eco-friendly features, such as solar panels on the cabins and 90 charging stations at boarding points.
The project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in Shimla, offering a scenic alternative to road travel and improving air quality. Officials anticipate a transformative impact on the city’s transportation system and a substantial boost to tourism. While the longest ropeway globally is in Bolivia (approximately 32 kilometers), Shimla’s new system will claim the title of Asia’s longest.
