Wed Apr 02 11:05:47 UTC 2025: ## India Defends Press Freedom Amidst Global Ranking Concerns
**New Delhi, April 2, 2025** – The Indian government has defended the nation’s press freedom, asserting that its media ecosystem does not require validation from foreign organizations. This statement comes in response to India’s declining ranking in the 2024 Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Global Press Freedom Index, where it placed 159th out of 180 countries.
Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan stated in the Lok Sabha that India boasts a vibrant press and does not need external assessment. He pointed to the constitutional protection of free speech (Article 19) and the robust judicial system as safeguards for journalists’ rights.
Mr. Murugan highlighted the role of the Press Council of India (PCI), an autonomous body, in addressing complaints regarding press freedom violations. He also cited the self-regulatory mechanism under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, as a means of ensuring press freedom in electronic media.
The RSF report, which cited concerns about journalists’ ability to work freely and independently, ranked India below countries such as Turkey, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Despite this, the government maintains its confidence in the state of Indian media.
