**Los Angeles, CA** – Aaron Carter, the younger brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter and a pop star in his own right, died from accidental drowning due to the combined effects of difluoroethane and alprazolam, according to his autopsy. The 34-year-old singer, father of an 11-month-old son, was found dead at his California home on November 5, 2022. His death comes two days before the release of his sixth and final album, *Blacklisted*.
Carter, who achieved fame with hits like “Aaron’s Party (Come and Get It),” was open about his struggles with substance abuse and mental health challenges. He publicly discussed his battles with dissociative identity disorder, manic depression, schizophrenia, and substance misuse, including the abuse of benzodiazepines and opiates, and huffing compressed gas. He had previously sought treatment at a rehabilitation center.
His former fiancée, Melanie Martin, described the difficulties of intervening in his life, highlighting the complexities of co-occurring disorders (COD), the combination of mental health and substance use issues.
Following Carter’s death, his family has made it their mission to raise awareness about COD. His sister, Angel Carter, who also lost a sister to a reported overdose, launched “Songs for Tomorrow,” a benefit concert to raise funds for the Kids Mental Health Foundation. She stated that the initiative is a way to honor Aaron’s legacy and further the conversation around mental health. A pilot episode for a TV series about group therapy and mental health awareness, featuring Carter, was completed shortly before his passing.
Us Weekly, in partnership with the Harris Project, a non-profit dedicated to preventing and treating COD, has released a special edition focusing on celebrities struggling with similar issues. The article revisits Carter’s story and encourages readers to seek help if needed. Resources for mental health and substance abuse support are included.
