**Chennai, India** – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coach Stephen Fleming has revealed the reason behind MS Dhoni’s lower batting position in IPL 2025: the former Indian captain’s knee condition. Dhoni, who has batted as low as number nine this season, is being strategically deployed later in the innings to preserve his physical capabilities.

Speaking after CSK’s six-run defeat to Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, Fleming stated that Dhoni’s knees are not as strong as they once were, making it impossible for him to bat for extended periods while also performing his wicket-keeping duties. “It’s a time thing,” Fleming explained. “His knees aren’t what they used to be. He can’t bat 10 overs running full stick.”

Fleming confirmed that Dhoni assesses his physical condition daily and adjusts his approach accordingly. He indicated that the ideal time for Dhoni to bat is around the 13th or 14th over, depending on the match situation. “He’s too valuable to us – leadership and wicket-keeping – to throw him in nine or ten overs,” Fleming emphasized.
