**New Delhi, March 28, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-nation tour next week, visiting Thailand and Sri Lanka to bolster regional cooperation. The trip, announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday, will see PM Modi participate in the sixth BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) summit in Bangkok from April 3rd to 4th. This will be the first physical BIMSTEC summit since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Myanmar military coup in February 2021.
The summit, hosted by Thailand, will focus on strengthening cooperation among member nations (India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan). Discussions will include institutional and capacity-building measures to enhance collaboration within the BIMSTEC framework. India is actively promoting regional cooperation through initiatives aimed at improving security, trade, investment, connectivity, and collaboration in areas like food, energy, climate, and human security.
During his time in Bangkok, PM Modi will also meet with the Thai Prime Minister to review bilateral cooperation and chart future partnerships. The two nations share strong historical and cultural ties.
Following the Bangkok summit, PM Modi will travel to Sri Lanka for a three-day state visit (April 4th-6th). He will hold discussions with President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, reviewing progress on collaborative projects agreed upon during the President’s visit to India. Meetings with other senior dignitaries and political leaders are also planned. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate development projects in Anuradhapura funded by India.
The MEA stated that the visits to Thailand and Sri Lanka reaffirm India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, ‘Act East’ policy, ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), and its vision for the Indo-Pacific. The ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision was announced during PM Modi’s recent visit to Mauritius.
