KANSAS CITY, MO – The Kansas City Royals are looking to build on their surprising 2024 season, which saw them go from a 106-loss campaign to a postseason berth, their first in nearly a decade. General Manager J.J. Picollo acknowledges the increased expectations but stresses the team’s focus is on incremental improvement rather than a dramatic win jump.
The Royals’ 86 wins secured an American League Wild Card spot, despite a late-season slump. This experience, Picollo says, highlighted the fragility of a season and the importance of building on the highs and lows.
The team’s successful 2024 season was fueled by key off-season acquisitions (Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Hunter Renfroe, Adam Frazier, Will Smith, Chris Stratton) and the breakout performance of Cole Ragans. A significant long-term contract extension for star Bobby Witt Jr. further solidified the team’s commitment to building a winning culture.
This off-season, Picollo prioritized three objectives: maintaining their strong starting pitching rotation, acquiring a leadoff hitter, and adding a consistent middle-of-the-lineup bat. While re-signing Wacha to a lucrative three-year deal addressed the first objective, the other two proved more challenging.
A trade with the Cincinnati Reds saw Brady Singer depart in exchange for Jonathan India (addressing the leadoff need) and Joey Wiemer. The departure of Singer was mitigated by re-signing Michael Lorenzen. Efforts to acquire a powerful middle-of-the-order bat, however, were unsuccessful, leaving the Royals to rely on the potential of MJ Melendez and Hunter Renfroe to step up. The team did strengthen their bullpen by signing Carlos Estévez.
Despite falling short of their off-season goals in some areas, the Royals are confident that their playoff experience, including a Wild Card round sweep of the Orioles, will benefit their young players. They hope to capitalize on the city’s renewed enthusiasm for winning, fueled by the success of the Kansas City Chiefs, and transform Kauffman Stadium into a playoff fortress once again.
