Thu Mar 27 07:20:01 UTC 2025: ## World’s Most Dangerous Road: Turkey’s D915 Defies Gravity and Caution

**Eastern Turkey** – Turkey’s D915 road, recently dubbed the world’s most dangerous road by Warrantywise.co.uk, is a 105-kilometer stretch of winding, treacherous terrain connecting the towns of Of and Bayburt. This “highway to hell,” as it’s been called, presents a formidable challenge even to experienced drivers.

Originally constructed by Russian soldiers during the Trebizond Campaign (1916-1918) using only hand tools, the road largely remains unpaved, consisting mostly of loose gravel despite some asphalt patching. Its challenging nature is due to 38 sharp hairpin turns, including the notorious Derebaşı turns—17 turns within a 5.1km stretch, at altitudes ranging from 5,617 to 6,677 feet. The narrowest sections force oncoming vehicles to yield, with one car backing up to allow passage. Adding to the peril, the road lacks guardrails, leaving vehicles vulnerable to plunging into the abyss.

Despite the inherent risks, the D915 sees daily use by hundreds of locals. While alternative routes exist, the D915 remains the preferred option due to its shorter distance. However, winter brings significant challenges, with snowstorms, avalanches, landslides, and heavy snowfall frequently blocking sections of the road. The D915 thus stands as a testament to both human ingenuity and the enduring power of necessity, a perilous path chosen daily for its efficiency despite its danger.
