**Ranchi, Jharkhand –** The murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has sparked widespread protests and a major disruption in the Jharkhand Assembly. Anil Mahto, also known as “Anil Tiger,” a former Zilla Parishad member and the BJP’s Ranchi rural district general secretary, was shot dead on Wednesday.
The killing led to immediate protests outside the Assembly building on Thursday, with BJP legislators demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits. Supporters of the BJP and the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) organized a nine-hour bandh in Ranchi, bringing parts of the city to a standstill.
Inside the Assembly, the issue erupted within minutes of the start of the proceedings. BJP MLAs disrupted the session, accusing the state government of failing to maintain law and order. Tourism Minister Sudivya Kumar countered, accusing the BJP of using the incident to destabilize the government and incite communal tensions, referencing a recent clash in Hazaribag.
The ensuing chaos resulted in the Speaker adjourning the House. Both the ruling party and the opposition traded accusations, further escalating the tension. An FIR has been filed regarding the incident, naming 10 individuals and 200 unidentified suspects. The investigation into Mahto’s murder is ongoing.
