CLEVELAND, OH – In a college basketball landscape increasingly defined by player transfers, Marquette University stands out as a bastion of loyalty and stability. The Golden Eagles’ success this NCAA tournament season is largely attributed to their senior class – Kam Jones, David Joplin, Stevie Mitchell, and walk-on Cam Brown – who have remained with the program throughout their college careers. This core group, nicknamed “the Guardians,” has helped Marquette reach the tournament for each of coach Shaka Smart’s four seasons, a feat made even more remarkable by the fact that Marquette is the only power-conference team not to have signed a single transfer from another Division I school since the 2022-23 season.
Coach Smart emphasized that this approach is a conscious decision rooted in valuing relationships, growth, and victory. He explained that while many coaches espouse these values, their actions often contradict them. The team’s success with only eight players starting games since 2022 speaks to the effectiveness of this philosophy.
The senior players themselves cite their strong bond as the key to their loyalty. Jones, a second-team AP All-American, boasts a remarkable 49-game double-figure scoring streak and is second in Marquette’s all-time scoring list. Mitchell, a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award, is also a Big East scholar-athlete. Joplin is set to break the school record for games played. Even walk-on Brown plays a crucial role, leading team discussions during timeouts and earning a graduate assistant position for next season.
While the upcoming graduation of this senior class will undoubtedly test Smart’s approach, he remains committed to his philosophy of investing in the players already on the roster. Marquette faces New Mexico in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
