Fri Mar 21 18:40:00 UTC 2025: ## BCCI Unveils New Demerit Points System for IPL, Focusing on Deterrence

**Mumbai, India** – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented a new demerit points system for the Indian Premier League (IPL), aiming to curb misconduct among players and officials through the threat of suspension rather than immediate bans. The system, detailed in a communique to franchises, draws inspiration from the International Cricket Council (ICC) code but differs in its three-year retention period for demerit points (compared to the ICC’s five-year period).

The system assigns demerit points based on the severity of the offense, ranging from one point for a 25% match fee fine to 7-8 points for a Level 4 breach. Accumulation of points triggers suspensions: 4-7 points results in a one-match ban, 8-11 points in a two-match ban, and so on, with 16 or more points leading to a five-match suspension. Suspensions are measured in “suspension points,” with each IPL match equaling one suspension point.

A key change is the handling of slow over-rate offenses. While previously resulting in an automatic suspension for the captain, now only fines and fielding restrictions will apply.

The BCCI clarified that Hardik Pandya’s suspension from last season will not incur demerit points under the new system. Sanctions imposed before the 2025 season will be served but won’t affect the demerit point tally.

Appeals against Level 2 and 3 sanctions are possible, but require a substantial INR 90 lakh (approximately $1.1 million USD) appeal fee, refundable only upon complete success.

The new regulations, approved by the IPL Governing Council, were explained to team captains and managers at a recent meeting. The BCCI believes this system will effectively deter future misconduct within the IPL.
