**Kolkata, India** – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused her political opponents of launching an online smear campaign against the state, alleging that they are spreading false information ahead of her upcoming trip to the United Kingdom.

Ms. Banerjee, who is scheduled to visit the UK next week for a series of engagements including a lecture at Oxford University, business meetings, and government-to-government (G2G) programs, stated that while she welcomes criticism, attempts to tarnish the image of Bengal internationally are unacceptable. She claimed the campaign is being waged through WhatsApp and email, accusing unnamed individuals of circulating damaging material aimed at discrediting the state.

“They are playing some dirty game,” Ms. Banerjee said, referencing a purported document being circulated, allegedly urging recipients to send it to universities to portray Bengal negatively.

The BJP, without explicitly confirming its involvement, responded to Ms. Banerjee’s accusations. BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh suggested the Chief Minister’s claims were a reaction to legitimate criticism, citing examples such as the high number of rape cases registered in Calcutta High Court. He argued that this reflects poorly on the state’s governance. He said that by asking small questions, they’re being accused of a smear campaign.

Ms. Banerjee’s UK trip includes a lecture at Oxford University, meetings with businesses, and G2G programs on March 24th, 26th, and 27th. She highlighted the strong relationship between West Bengal and the UK, referencing the UK’s participation in the Bengal Global Business Summit. The upcoming visit is expected to involve significant diplomatic and business interactions.
