**Chennai, March 21, 2025** – The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) conducted the first trial run of its driverless train for Phase II of the network late Thursday night. The trial, initially scheduled for 5 p.m., was delayed until 11:30 p.m. due to technical glitches in the overhead equipment.
A cable snapped approximately one kilometer from the Poonamallee Depot, causing a delay of several hours while repairs were undertaken. Despite being a driverless train, a driver operated the train during the trial run, maintaining a speed of approximately 15 kmph. The 3-kilometer trial run commenced at the Poonamallee Depot and concluded at Mullaithottam.
The trial run involved a section of Corridor 4, which stretches 26.1 kilometers from Poonamallee Bypass to Light House. While the entire corridor is under construction, the 9-kilometer stretch between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Daily trial runs are planned to continue.
