**Chennai, March 21, 2025** – A new book detailing the history of Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, titled “To the seventh generation: the journey of Christian Medical College Vellore,” was launched in Chennai on Wednesday. The book, authored by former CMC director Dr. V.I. Mathan, who dedicated 50 years of his life to the institution, was released at a ceremony attended by current CMC director Dr. Vikram Mathew and Dr. V.V. Bashi, director of the Institute of Cardiac Diseases.
Dr. Mathew praised Dr. Mathan’s work, highlighting its unique perspective, as Dr. Mathan was one of the few people to have known the hospital’s founder, Ida Scudder. Dr. Bashi, whose career was significantly shaped by his time at CMC from 1980 to 1992, emphasized the institution’s emphasis on teaching and publication, skills that remain invaluable even in today’s technologically advanced medical field. He noted that the fundamental skills of patient examination and history-taking remain crucial, even alongside modern technologies like AI and machine learning. Activist Usha Jesudasan offered readings from the book at the launch event.
