**New Delhi, March 22, 2025** – New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon concluded a six-day visit to India, marking his first trip to the country as head of government. The visit, accompanied by a large delegation including ministers and business leaders, significantly advanced bilateral ties, particularly in maritime security and trade.

A key highlight was Luxon’s participation in the Raisina Dialogue, where he advocated for a secure and inclusive Indo-Pacific, emphasizing New Zealand’s commitment to a rules-based order. The visit saw a renewed push for a long-delayed free trade agreement (FTA) between the two nations, expected to boost trade significantly across various sectors including agriculture and pharmaceuticals. This economic collaboration aligns with India’s strategy to integrate into global supply chains.

Strengthening maritime cooperation was another significant outcome. Both countries agreed to explore increased naval interactions, potentially through New Zealand’s participation in India’s Milan naval exercises. New Zealand’s participation in IPOI will facilitate collaboration on maritime ecology, resource management, and capacity building in the Indo-Pacific, particularly addressing challenges like IUU fishing and climate change impacts on island nations. While not a member of the Quad, New Zealand’s growing security partnership with India allows for greater alignment with Quad initiatives on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and maritime infrastructure projects.

The visit marks a strengthening of India-New Zealand relations, fostering deeper collaboration in trade, security, and regional governance, creating a more resilient and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
