Thu Mar 20 13:31:32 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Launches Land Acquisition Committees to Tackle Extreme Poverty
**Thiruvananthapuram, March 20, 2025** – The Kerala State government is accelerating its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty by establishing land purchase facilitation committees at the local body level. A recent statewide survey identified 64,006 extremely poor families, with 5,776 lacking land and housing. While the government provided land and housing to only 412 families by December 2024, these new committees aim to expedite the process.
The committees will be responsible for identifying suitable public land for constructing homes for the needy. Each committee will be headed by the local body chairperson, with the welfare standing committee head as vice-chairperson and the local body secretary as the nodal officer. Additional members include the Community Development Society chairperson, assistant secretary, and village extension officer.
This initiative is part of a larger program that developed micro-plans for each of the identified families, outlining both immediate and long-term needs. The government hopes that the new committees will significantly improve the pace of land acquisition and housing construction, addressing the critical housing shortage among the state’s most vulnerable population.
