Wed Mar 19 06:50:00 UTC 2025: ## From U19 Star to IPL Umpire: Tanmay Srivastava’s Career Takes Unexpected Turn

**Bengaluru, India** – While Virat Kohli continues his illustrious IPL career with Royal Challengers Bangalore, a former teammate from India’s triumphant 2008 U19 World Cup squad is embarking on a new chapter in the same league – as an umpire.

Tanmay Srivastava, who was the top scorer in the 2008 U19 World Cup final, will make his IPL umpiring debut this season at the age of 35. His cricketing career, while initially promising—including a contract with Punjab Kings—ultimately didn’t reach the same heights as Kohli’s.

Srivastava, who captained Uttarakhand before retiring at 30, told the Times of India that he realised his playing potential was limited. Faced with the choice of prolonging a less successful playing career or pursuing other opportunities within cricket, he opted for the latter. After exploring coaching options, he decided to focus on umpiring, a path he pursued while also working as a talent scout for RCB and coaching at the National Cricket Academy. He described the umpiring exams as rigorous, requiring extensive study of cricket laws and their implications.

Srivastava noted that the cricket board is actively encouraging former players to become umpires, recognizing the valuable on-field experience they bring. While he hasn’t yet received an on-field IPL appointment, he remains hopeful. He maintains contact with Kohli and anticipates a potential reunion during this IPL season. Srivastava’s journey highlights the diverse and often unexpected paths that can unfold in a sporting career.
