**Berhampur, Odisha – March 19, 2025** – A violent clash between two groups in Kharipalli village, Ganjam district, Odisha, resulted in the deaths of three people and serious injuries to three others on Tuesday. Police have confirmed that the conflict stemmed from accusations of witchcraft.
The deceased have been identified as Khadal Behera (70), his son Ratnakar Behera (35), and Ramesh Behera (40). The injured were initially treated at Dharakote hospital before being transferred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where their condition is reported as serious.
According to police sources, the altercation began when one group attacked Khadal Behera and his son with sharp weapons, believing them to be practicing witchcraft. Khadal and Ratnakar died at the scene. Subsequent retaliation by relatives of the victims led to injuries among members of the opposing group, resulting in the death of Ramesh Behera.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, police suspect pre-existing animosity between the groups played a role. Ganjam Superintendent of Police Subhendu Kumar Patra stated that the situation, while initially tense, is now under control following the deployment of additional police forces to the village. A thorough investigation is underway.
