**New Delhi, March 19, 2025** – Poland’s Secretary of State and Deputy Foreign Minister, Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski, has suggested that the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin could prove beneficial in future negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war. However, he stressed that he believes US President Donald Trump is currently better positioned to mediate, advocating for a single mediator to focus efforts.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, Bartoszewski told ANI that while communication between Putin and Modi might be helpful eventually, Trump currently holds more sway with Putin. “I think a mediator is welcomed, as much as President Putin does talk to Prime Minister Modi, so that may be at some stage very helpful, but at the moment I think who has any leeway with President Putin is President Trump,” he stated.
Bartoszewski also praised Modi’s role in preventing the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. He revealed that Putin had threatened to deploy tactical nuclear weapons but reconsidered after calls from both Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. “President Putin was threatening to use tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Ukraine…He received two phone calls – one from the President of China, Xi Jinping, and one from PM Modi,” Bartoszewski said, adding that neither country approved of the war.
In other comments, Bartoszewski condemned the recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, advocating for a ceasefire and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He emphasized Poland’s long-standing support for a two-state solution.
