**Kolkata, India** – A 45-year-old woman in Kolkata has been diagnosed with human coronavirus HKU1 (HCoV-HKU1), a relatively uncommon strain of coronavirus. The woman, currently hospitalized at a private hospital in South Kolkata, has been experiencing fever, cough, and cold for the past two weeks. Her condition is reported to be stable.

Hospital officials have emphasized that this is an isolated case and there is no reason for widespread public concern. While advising caution, they stress that HCoV-HKU1 typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms, unlike the more severe SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19.

Human coronaviruses, including HKU1, 229E, NL63, and OC43, are known to cause mild upper respiratory tract illnesses. Symptoms commonly include runny nose, fever, cough, headache, and sore throat. In rare cases, untreated infections can lead to more severe complications like bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

Dr. Monica Mahajan, Director of Internal Medicine at Max Healthcare, stated that HCoV-HKU1 infections are less severe than those caused by SARS and MERS viruses. She recommends basic preventative measures such as cough etiquette, avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms, and maintaining a healthy diet. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for HCoV-HKU1, but most individuals recover without intervention.

Individuals with weakened immune systems, infants, young children, and the elderly may be more susceptible to complications. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets produced by coughing and sneezing, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces.

While the discovery of this case highlights the ongoing circulation of various coronaviruses, health officials reiterate that there is no cause for panic.
