**New Delhi** – Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has conceded that his initial criticism of India’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war was misguided. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, Tharoor admitted to being “left with egg on his face,” acknowledging that India’s policy has positioned the country uniquely to potentially contribute to lasting peace.
Tharoor, a former Minister of State for External Affairs, had previously criticized India’s refusal to condemn Russia’s aggression, citing violations of the UN Charter and international law. However, he now believes this perspective was flawed. He highlighted India’s ability to maintain relationships with both Russia and Ukraine, exemplified by Prime Minister Modi’s visits to both countries. This neutrality, Tharoor argues, gives India significant leverage in potential peace negotiations.
While emphasizing he cannot speak for the government, Tharoor suggested that India might be willing to contribute peacekeeping troops to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached. He noted that Russia’s opposition to NATO peacekeepers makes a non-European force, such as India’s, a more viable option. He cited India’s extensive peacekeeping experience – over 49 missions – as evidence of its commitment to global stability. He contrasted this potential willingness with the strong parliamentary opposition to sending troops to Iraq in 2003.
Tharoor attributed India’s advantageous position partly to its geographical distance from the conflict zone. He concluded by asserting that India’s current approach, while initially questioned by him, has unexpectedly placed the nation in a position to play a crucial role in bringing about a lasting resolution to the conflict.
