**Mangaluru, March 17, 2025** – The twin Railway Under Bridge (RuB) project at Mahakalipadpu in Mangaluru, originally slated for completion in December 2022, has once again missed its deadline. The project, funded by Mangaluru Smart City Limited (₹30.7 crore) and MPLAD funds (₹19.87 crore), was initially promised to be finished within 12 months of its foundation laying in March 2021.
The ongoing delays have caused significant disruption to traffic, with all vehicles except two-wheelers being diverted since December 21, 2022. This diversion through Pumpwell Circle adds considerable travel time and expense for commuters.
According to the Southern Railway’s Palakkad division Divisional Railway Manager, Arun Kumar Chaturvedi, the delay is due to the steep slopes at the construction site requiring micro-piling for stability. This necessitated a shift to the box-pushing method for installing one of the concrete boxes under the railway lines. While two boxes under the Shoranur-Mangaluru Junction line and one under the Shoranur-Mangaluru Central line are complete, the pushing of the remaining box under the Central line is scheduled to begin in the first week of April. The project is now expected to conclude by the end of April.
However, further delays could occur. The Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) is responsible for shifting three electricity poles and reconstructing the approach road to the worksite. Until these tasks are completed, the level crossing gate cannot be closed, hindering further construction. MSCL officials assure that these issues will be resolved promptly, aiming for project completion before the monsoon season.
