**Sana’a, Yemen/Washington D.C. -** The United States launched a series of airstrikes on multiple locations in Yemen, resulting in the deaths of at least 31 people and injuring over 101, mostly women and children, according to the Houthi health ministry. The strikes targeted the capital Sana’a, as well as Houthi strongholds in Saada, Al Bayda, and Radaa.
Residents described the explosions as violent and terrifying, with one eyewitness comparing the impact to an earthquake. The Houthi political bureau condemned the strikes as war crimes, vowing a retaliatory response to what they characterized as an escalation of hostilities.
These strikes, the first since President Donald Trump took office in January, followed escalating tensions between the US and the Houthi rebels. President Trump cited threats to Red Sea shipping as justification, issuing a strongly worded statement vowing “overwhelming lethal force” until his objectives are met. He also directly addressed the Houthis, warning them that “their time is up,” and threatened Iran with severe consequences for continued support of the group.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi responded by rejecting the US’s authority to dictate Iranian foreign policy and demanded an end to US support for Israel and the ongoing violence in Yemen.
The US had recently designated the Houthi movement as a foreign terrorist organization, further escalating the conflict. The Houthis, who control much of Yemen, have launched numerous attacks against ships in the Red Sea since the October 2023 Israel-Hamas war, reportedly targeting both US warships (174 times) and commercial vessels (145 times) since the beginning of the year. They claim these attacks are in solidarity with Palestine.
The situation remains extremely volatile, with the potential for further escalation. International concern is growing over the civilian casualties and the wider implications of this renewed conflict in Yemen.
