**New Delhi, March 16, 2025** – Justice Joymalya Bagchi, currently a judge of the Calcutta High Court, will be sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on Monday, March 17. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna will administer the oath at a ceremony on the Supreme Court premises.
Justice Bagchi’s appointment fills one of the Supreme Court’s vacancies, leaving only one position unfilled out of a sanctioned strength of 34. His tenure on the Supreme Court is expected to exceed six years, culminating in his service as Chief Justice of India (CJI) from May 25, 2031, to October 2, 2031.
The Union government cleared Justice Bagchi’s appointment on March 10, following a March 6 recommendation from a five-member collegium headed by CJI Khanna. The collegium noted that no Calcutta High Court judge had been elevated to CJI since 2013.
Justice Bagchi, born October 3, 1966, has served as a High Court judge for over 13 years, accumulating extensive experience in various legal fields. His career included a period at the Andhra Pradesh High Court before returning to the Calcutta High Court in 2021. He holds the 11th position in the all-India seniority list of High Court judges.
