**Chennai, March 15, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing issued a stark warning today about a surge in extortion cases linked to fraudulent loan applications. Scammers are using apps like “Prime Lend” and “Candy Cash” to gain access to users’ personal data, including contacts, photos, messages, and phone information.
After victims obtain loans, the scammers demand excessive repayments. Refusal to pay results in relentless harassment, including blackmail using morphed obscene images and threats of public shaming.
The alarming trend reflects a significant increase in reported incidents. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal recorded 9,873 complaints related to fraudulent loan apps from Tamil Nadu in 2024. Already in 2025, 3,834 such complaints have been filed. The Cyber Crime Wing urges the public to exercise extreme caution when downloading and using loan applications.
