**Chennai, March 15, 2025** – A new book offering practical guidance on India’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act was launched in Chennai today by a panel of esteemed judges from the Madras High Court. Authored by Madras High Court advocate Dhana Madhri Guruswamy, “Treatise on POSH ACT” provides insights into legal frameworks and addresses challenges posed by the Act, including online harassment.
The book launch, held at an event organized by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), was attended by Chief Justice K.R. Shriram, Justices Anita Sumanth, M. Sundar, V. Bhavani Subbaroyan, and R.N. Manjula. Chief Justice Shriram emphasized the POSH Act’s importance in fostering safe workplaces for women, highlighting its applicability across various sectors and the crucial roles of internal committees. He also stressed the need for greater awareness among women in the unorganized sector.
Justice Sundar praised the book’s sector-wise explanations and detailed inquiry process sections, while Justice Subbaroyan, Chairperson of the court’s Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC), underscored the book’s role as a practical guide. Justice Sumanth advocated for Tamil translations to broaden its reach and addressed the question of gender neutrality, stating that the current context demands women-centric legislation. Justice Manjula acknowledged the challenges in implementing the Act, including employer reluctance to form internal committees.
Author Guruswamy described the book as a concise resource aiming to bridge the gap between legal interpretation and practical application, empowering committee members to act as effective arbitrators. MCCI president Ramkumar Shankar also participated in the event, which included a session on empowering women in the workplace. The judges lauded the court’s own GSICC as a model for other workplaces.
