ALUVA, KERALA—Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, has refused to apologize for calling the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) “a cancer to the soul of the nation.” This statement, made during a speech commemorating the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Union Christian College in Aluva, followed an alleged incident where Mr. Gandhi was stopped and questioned by RSS and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists near Neyyattinkara for his earlier comments.
The incident, which occurred Wednesday, has only strengthened Mr. Gandhi’s resolve, he stated. He expressed shock that such an event could take place in Kerala, a state known for its tolerance and respect for opposing views. Mr. Gandhi characterized the confrontation as a fight more crucial than the Indian independence struggle, declaring a common enemy exists.
Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, attended the event at the college, which included a commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s 1925 visit. Mr. Gandhi’s speech was part of the centenary celebrations of that visit, as well as the commemoration of Sree Narayana Guru’s historic meeting with Mahatma Gandhi. The event was held near a mango tree planted by Mahatma Gandhi himself.
