**Hyderabad, March 14, 2025** – Two scientists from the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad, Dr. Sayan Basu and Dr. Vivek Singh, have been granted an Australian patent for a groundbreaking cell therapy designed to repair damaged corneas. The therapy, which uses a combination of limbal epithelial and stromal cells, offers a potential alternative to corneal transplants for treating various corneal diseases.
The therapy has already received a 20-year patent from the Indian Patent Office and is currently undergoing government-approved clinical trials in India. While promising, further validation is needed before it can be used on patients.
Corneal scarring, a leading cause of blindness and visual impairment globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, often requires complex and lifelong management through corneal transplants. This new cell-based therapy utilizes either the patient’s own cells or donor corneal stem cells to regenerate healthy corneal tissue.
Dr. Basu, a corneal surgeon and clinician-scientist at LVPEI, expressed optimism about the therapy’s potential to revolutionize corneal pathology treatment if the clinical trials prove successful. The development signifies a significant advancement in the fight against corneal blindness.
