Fri Mar 14 16:41:28 UTC 2025: ## Madurai Court Orders End to Sewage Discharge into Sakkarakottai Tank
**Madurai, March 14, 2025** – The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has issued a directive to local authorities to immediately cease the discharge of sewage and effluents into the Sakkarakottai kanmoi (tank) near Ramanathapuram. The order follows a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by A. Thungu Abdul Rahman, a resident of Sakkarakottai, highlighting the untreated waste and sewage being directly released into the water body.
The court, presided over by Justices G.R. Swaminathan and B. Pugalendhi, emphasized the importance of maintaining the purity of water bodies. The justices placed responsibility on the jurisdictional Block Development Officer and the local executive authority to ensure this.
Mr. Rahman’s petition detailed the lack of sewage treatment facilities and underground sewage systems in the area, leading to the direct discharge of untreated waste into the kanmoi. This pollution, he argued, has negatively impacted the health of residents and constitutes a grave environmental disaster. He noted that despite promises made by authorities in 2018 and subsequent protests by residents, no action had been taken. The court’s order mandates an immediate end to this practice and the restoration of the tank to its original pristine condition.
