Fri Mar 14 13:28:58 UTC 2025: ## Solar Fence Constructed to Keep Elephants Away from Kerala Settlements

**Kannur, Kerala – March 14, 2025** – A four-kilometer temporary solar fence is under construction at Aralam Farm in Kannur, Kerala, to prevent wild elephants from entering nearby human settlements. Three kilometers are already complete and energized, providing immediate protection for the tribal resettlement area until a permanent “elephant wall” is built. The project, a collaborative effort between the Forest Department and local teams, utilizes voluntary labor. Additional preventative measures include plans for a hanging fence along a river and a five-kilometer fence already operational from Valayanchal to Kotappa River, supported by increased night patrols. These initiatives are part of a larger state government program to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, which also includes efforts to ensure water availability for animals during the summer months, as part of “Mission Food, Fodder, and Water”. The temporary fence will be removed once the permanent structures are completed.
