Thu Mar 13 18:39:47 UTC 2025: **Tamil Nadu to Re-tender Smart Meter Installation Project**

**Chennai, March 14, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has announced a retendering process for the installation of 3.4 crore smart meters across the state. This follows the cancellation of a previous contract awarded to the Adani Group. The ₹20,000 crore project aims to modernize the state’s electricity infrastructure, benefiting both domestic and commercial consumers.

The state has been divided into six zones for the project, with tenders issued separately for each. The meters will cover 2.5 crore single-phase domestic consumers, 50 lakh three-phase consumers, 15,000 high-tension customers, and over 4.75 lakh distribution transformers. Chennai, along with Vellore, will require 49 lakh meters, with a similar number needed for Kancheepuram and Villupuram.

A key benefit for consumers will be a shift to monthly billing cycles, replacing the current bi-monthly system. Smart meters will provide accurate consumption data, reducing revenue loss for the TNPDCL. The project, initially planned under the RAPDRP program, is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of electricity billing and distribution in Tamil Nadu.
