Thu Mar 13 07:53:49 UTC 2025: ## Sambhal Mosque to be Whitewashed Following Court Order

**Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, March 13, 2025** – The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) began assessing the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal today, ahead of court-ordered whitewashing and renovation work. The Allahabad High Court mandated the whitewashing within one week, following a case alleging the mosque was built on the ruins of a Hindu temple.

An ASI team conducted measurements and prepared cost estimates for the project. Zafar Ali, president of the Shahi Jama Masjid committee, confirmed full cooperation with the ASI and expressed hope that the work could begin as early as today, after receiving approval. However, due to the Holi festival, painting will resume the day after if approval is delayed. The exact area needing whitewashing is still being determined. The mosque committee will oversee the project under ASI guidance.

The court order follows months of controversy. In November 2024, a court-ordered survey of the mosque sparked violent riots resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries. The protests stemmed from claims that the mosque was built on the site of a destroyed Hindu temple. The mosque committee’s lawyer had previously argued for whitewashing, citing photographs showing the need for it and questioning the ASI’s opposition. The ASI’s actions today mark a significant step in implementing the court’s decision and potentially easing tensions in the community.
