Thu Mar 13 14:29:15 UTC 2025: ## V.O. Chidambaranar Port Achieves Record Container Traffic, 20 Days Ahead of Schedule

**Thoothukudi, March 13, 2025** – The V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi has surpassed its previous year’s container traffic record by handling over 747,363 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) as of March 12th, 20 days ahead of schedule. This marks a significant achievement, representing a 7.52% increase compared to the same period last year. As of February 2025, the port had already processed 721,268 TEUs.

This success follows the port’s recent recognition as the third-best container port in India (among ports handling over 500,000 TEUs) by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways on February 21st.

Chairperson of V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Susanta Kumar Purohit, attributed the milestone to the tireless efforts of the container terminals. He further highlighted the increase in ad-hoc calls from various container lines, exceeding 30. Mr. Purohit expressed confidence that the port’s capacity will further expand following the completion of dredging and widening of the port’s entrance mouth in the coming months.
