Wed Mar 12 18:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Commanders Bring Back Veteran Backup QB Marcus Mariota on One-Year Deal

**ASHBURN, VA –** The Washington Commanders are bolstering their quarterback room with the return of veteran Marcus Mariota, the team announced Wednesday. A source confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Mariota has agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract.

Mariota, 31, served as a valuable backup to rookie starter Jayden Daniels in 2024, earning praise from both Daniels and the coaching staff for his mentorship. His contributions extended beyond guidance, however. Stepping in for the injured Daniels, Mariota led the Commanders to two crucial victories. In a Week 7 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, he orchestrated a 40-7 win, completing 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He capped off the regular season with a dramatic comeback win over the Dallas Cowboys, entering the game at halftime and leading a 23-19 victory. His performance included a game-winning 5-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin with only two seconds left on the clock.

The former Heisman Trophy winner (2014) and second overall NFL draft pick has a career spanning nine seasons, including five with the Tennessee Titans. He’s seen time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, and now returns to Washington. While mostly serving as a backup in recent years, he started 13 games for the Falcons in 2022. Throughout his career, Mariota has amassed 16,184 passing yards, 97 touchdown passes, and 93 games played with 74 starts, also adding 2,156 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. His leadership and experience make him a significant asset to the Commanders’ quarterback depth chart.
