Wed Mar 12 17:23:12 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan Train Hijacking Ends in Deadly Standoff: 33 Attackers Killed, Dozens of Hostages Freed
**QUETTA, Pakistan –** A deadly hostage situation aboard the Jaffar Express train in Balochistan province ended Wednesday with the death of all 33 attackers, Pakistani military officials announced. At least 346 hostages were freed, but the rescue operation came at a heavy cost: 27 hostages and one paramilitary soldier were killed in the attack, according to security sources.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group seeking independence for the Balochistan region, claimed responsibility for the hijacking. The train, carrying nearly 400 passengers, was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar when it was targeted near Sibi city. The attackers ambushed the train while it passed through tunnels.
This marks the first time a train has been hijacked in Pakistan by armed groups. While the BLA has carried out numerous attacks in the region in recent years, including a suicide bombing at Quetta railway station in November 2024 and several track bombings, this incident represents a significant escalation. The Jaffar Express, frequently used by security personnel from other provinces, has been a repeated target of Baloch separatists.
The military spokesperson stated the rescue operation was concluded successfully, resulting in the elimination of all attackers. However, the high death toll among hostages raises questions about the adequacy of security measures on the train, given the known security risks in the region, according to Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder reporting from Quetta. He highlighted concerns from the public regarding a perceived lack of security on the railway line.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but underdeveloped province, has a long history of insecurity and conflict fueled by Baloch separatist movements. The BLA, banned as a terrorist organization by Pakistan and the US, has been active in the region for years. The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges facing the province and the vulnerability of civilian transportation.
