**KOTTAYAM, Kerala – March 13, 2025** – K.K. Kochu, a renowned Dalit activist, writer, and thinker, passed away today at the age of 76. Kochu, who had been battling cancer, died this morning at Kottayam Medical College.

A leading figure in Kerala’s Dalit movement, Kochu’s contributions spanned writing, social activism, and public speaking. He received numerous accolades for his work, culminating in the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2021 for his lifetime achievements. His autobiography, *Dalithan*, is considered a landmark work in Dalit literature. Other notable works include *The Distance to Buddha*, *A History Lesson for Nationalism*, and *Riot and Culture*.

Kochu’s activism was extensive. He was involved in several organizations, including the Communist Yuvajana Vedi, the People’s Workers’ Union, and the Manushyavakasha Samithi (Human Rights Committee). He also served as a member of the Central Committee of the Zedian organization and as editor of its weekly publication. His commitment to social justice saw him imprisoned for 16 days during the Emergency and later forced underground for six months.

Beyond his activism, Kochu had a long career with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), starting as a clerk in 1977 and retiring as a senior assistant in 2001.

MV Govindan, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), expressed condolences, highlighting Kochu’s tireless fight for Dalit rights and his dedication to documenting their struggles. Kochu’s passing marks a significant loss for the Dalit community and the literary world in Kerala.
