Wed Mar 12 21:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Lamar University Achieves Prestigious R2 Research Designation
**BEAUMONT, TX** – Lamar University (LU) has achieved a significant milestone, earning the coveted R2 (Research 2) designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This marks the first time in the university’s history that it has received this recognition, signifying high research activity and doctorate production.
The announcement was made at a press conference on March 4th. President Jaime Taylor emphasized that the R2 classification is a direct result of increased externally funded research, a priority since she assumed her position. With $8.2 million in research expenditures in 2024 and 64 research doctorates awarded in fiscal year 2023, LU surpassed the required criteria of at least $5 million in annual research spending and 20 research doctoral degrees.
LU is now among only 139 institutions nationwide and 16 in Texas to hold the R2 distinction. Importantly, it is one of only two universities in the Texas State University System to achieve this ranking, alongside Sam Houston State University.
The R2 designation places LU among elite research institutions, showcasing the university’s commitment to research and innovation and highlighting the caliber of its faculty and research staff. President Taylor described the Carnegie Classification as the “gold standard” for recognizing research activity in universities.
The achievement will allow LU to strategically invest in research infrastructure, attracting top faculty and providing enhanced hands-on research opportunities for students. This will better prepare students for their careers and expand the university’s local impact through research centers focused on port management, midstream operations, and community resilience.
Dr. Gene Theodori, Associate Provost for Academic & Research Administration, highlighted LU’s current $19 million in active research funds, sourced from various federal, state, and charitable organizations, and collaborations with prestigious universities and private industry leaders.
The R2 designation underscores LU’s commitment not only to research but also to student engagement in research projects, fostering a win-win approach that prepares career-ready graduates. Interim Provost Dr. Brett Welch stated that the designation is a testament to the university’s success in expanding externally funded research, opening new avenues for faculty and student involvement. The university’s research efforts address real-world problems, leading to advancements that benefit society.
