**Patna, Bihar –** Construction of the Mokama-Begusarai bridge, Asia’s largest six-lane cable-stayed bridge spanning the Ganges River, is in its final stages and expected to open to the public in April. Over 92% complete, the ₹1161 crore project is poised to significantly improve connectivity in Bihar.
The 1.865 km bridge, along with 6.285 km of approach roads, will link Aunta in Mokama to Simaria in Begusarai. This will reduce travel time between Patna and Begusarai by two to two-and-a-half hours, diverting traffic from existing bridges like the Mahatma Gandhi Setu and Rajendra Setu. The 34-meter wide bridge boasts three 13-meter lanes on each side, plus pedestrian and cyclist walkways, and will include lighting for nighttime use.
Originally slated for completion in 42 months, the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and fluctuating Ganges water levels. However, it is now back on track, with one section opening in April and the other in May. The bridge is part of a larger infrastructural development along the Ganges, including six vehicle under bridges, two rail under bridges, and a rail over bridge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in 2017, and construction began in August 2018. The bridge is expected to boost regional economic growth and improve connectivity between North and South Bihar, bringing numerous cities closer together.
