Wed Mar 12 08:17:27 UTC 2025: ## Houthi Rebels Resume Attacks on Israeli Ships in Red Sea

**Aden, Yemen** – Yemen’s Houthi rebels have announced a resumption of attacks against Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and surrounding waters, citing Israel’s failure to meet a deadline for resuming aid deliveries to Gaza. The group issued a statement late Tuesday declaring a renewed “ban on the passage of all Israeli ships,” effective immediately. Any Israeli ship violating this ban, which extends to the Arabian Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden, will be targeted, the Houthis warned.

This announcement follows a four-day ultimatum issued by the Houthis last Friday, demanding Israel facilitate the flow of aid to Gaza. The rebels had temporarily suspended their attacks on shipping following a ceasefire in Gaza in January, but threatened renewed action if Israel blocked aid. The Israeli blockade, implemented in March, aims to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages taken during October’s attack.

The Houthis’ renewed campaign, which began in November 2023, has already resulted in the sinking of two vessels, the seizure of another, and the deaths of at least four seafarers. The attacks significantly disrupted global shipping, forcing many vessels to take longer, alternative routes around the Cape of Good Hope, instead of using the Suez Canal. The disruption prompted the US and EU to deploy naval missions to protect shipping lanes, while the US and UK conducted airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen.

Analysts believe the Houthis’ actions have elevated their profile internationally, transforming them from a regional threat into a group directly challenging Israeli and Western interests. This escalation comes after the US recently designated the Houthi movement as a foreign terrorist organization. The renewed attacks are expected to further destabilize the region and heighten international tensions.
