Wed Mar 12 09:45:23 UTC 2025: ## Bengal Assembly Speaker Cuts Off BJP, Sparking Political Row
**Kolkata, March 14** – A major political clash erupted in the West Bengal Assembly today after Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay barred BJP legislators from receiving any assembly documents. This dramatic move followed an incident where BJP MLAs tore official papers during a protest over alleged attacks on Hindu temples and a subsequent walkout.
The BJP had sought the adjournment of the House to discuss these alleged attacks, which they claim involved vandalism and arson targeting temples and Hindu communities in several districts, including Tamluk, Murshidabad, and Uluberia. They also alleged attacks on those celebrating India’s Champions Trophy victory in Uluberia. The Speaker rejected this motion, as well as a BJP bill on child rights, prompting the walkout and the document-shredding protest.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari condemned the Speaker’s action, calling it unprecedented and a violation of democratic principles. He accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of suppressing opposition voices and using force to silence dissent. Adhikari, who was previously suspended from the assembly, also staged a protest outside the building with other BJP MLAs, alleging inaction by the police in investigating the temple attacks.
He further leveled serious accusations against the state police, claiming they instructed people to finish Holi celebrations by 11 am on Friday (March 14th), a day coinciding with special prayers for another community. He termed this and other alleged instances of police action as communal, referring to the state government as “Muslim League 2.” He also predicted a BJP victory in the next elections, promising to remove TMC MLAs from the Assembly.
While senior TMC leader and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim declined to comment on Adhikari’s remarks, TMC MLA Shaukat Molla warned that Muslim MLAs would not remain silent if treated in the manner Adhikari described. The BJP has announced larger protests for tomorrow. The incident has significantly escalated tensions between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP in West Bengal.
