Wed Mar 12 15:08:54 UTC 2025: ## Kerala School Children Treated for Viral Meningitis

**KOCHI, KERALA –** Five students from a private school in Kalamassery, Ernakulam district, Kerala, are receiving medical treatment for suspected viral meningitis. According to district health authorities, the children are in stable condition. Samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Alappuzha for testing.

Viral meningitis, a less severe form of meningitis than its bacterial counterpart, is typically self-limiting. However, early diagnosis is crucial to rule out bacterial meningitis, a medical emergency requiring immediate antibiotic treatment. Bacterial meningitis, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications including hearing loss, cognitive impairment, and even death.

Viral meningitis is caused by a range of viruses, most commonly enteroviruses. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. In young children, symptoms might be less specific, manifesting as irritability, poor feeding, or lethargy. Treatment for viral meningitis is primarily supportive, focusing on pain relief, fluid management, and nutrition.

While viral meningitis usually resolves within a week or two without lasting effects, prevention through good hygiene practices like frequent handwashing, avoiding sharing personal items, and cleaning surfaces with disinfectants is vital. Vaccines are available for some bacterial causes of meningitis, as well as for viral causes such as mumps and chickenpox. The article emphasizes the importance of keeping sick children home to prevent the spread of infection. Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Convener, Research Cell, Kerala State IMA, provided expert commentary.
