Tue Mar 11 14:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Manipur Protests Turn Violent as Armoured Vehicle Battles Kuki Tribes

**Imphal, Manipur –** Tensions escalated sharply in Manipur on the first day of a government-mandated initiative to restore free movement throughout the state. An armored vehicle of the central security forces was subjected to a violent attack by Kuki tribal protesters, highlighting the ongoing conflict between the Kuki and Meitei communities.

A viral video depicts the armored vehicle being pelted with stones and other projectiles as it navigated a roadblock. Despite significant damage to the vehicle, including the shattering of the windshield, security personnel managed to push through the blockade unharmed. The vehicle plowed through obstacles including a bus, van, and multiple lines of burning tires and metal barrels. Reinforcements were waiting on the other side.

While some buses escorted by security forces successfully resumed trips between districts, the day was marked by further violence. One protester died from gunshot wounds, and sixteen protesters and twenty-seven security personnel sustained injuries. Two security vehicles were also set on fire. Police reported that some protesters fired upon security forces, prompting retaliatory fire. Authorities maintain that security forces exercised restraint, using minimal force to counter the violence.

Despite the government’s order prohibiting road blockades, Kuki tribes continue their protests, demanding a separate administration before agreeing to free movement within the state. This ongoing conflict, which began in May 2023, has already claimed over 250 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people. The conflict centers around issues of land rights and political representation between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-dwelling Kuki tribes. The differing viewpoints of the communities regarding free movement and the ongoing negotiations further complicate the situation.
