Wed Mar 12 04:14:49 UTC 2025: ## US Backs Syrian Deal Integrating Kurdish Forces into State Institutions

**Washington, D.C.** – The United States has voiced its support for a landmark agreement between the Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to integrate the latter into Syrian state institutions. The deal, announced Monday, grants the Syrian central government full control of the SDF-administered northeastern region, ending years of de facto autonomy.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement Tuesday reaffirming US support for a “credible, non-sectarian governance” in Syria. While welcoming the agreement, Rubio expressed concern over recent violence against minorities in the region.

The agreement, brokered between Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi, involves the merging of all civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria, including key infrastructure like airports and oil and gas fields. It also includes a nationwide ceasefire and SDF cooperation in combating pro-Assad forces. Crucially, the deal guarantees Kurdish citizens their rights and constitutional protections.

This accord marks a significant development in Syrian politics following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December. It comes amidst ongoing violence affecting the Alawite minority and represents a major step towards national reconciliation.

While discussions regarding SDF integration had been ongoing, the deal was hampered by concerns over the SDF’s commitment to opposing the former regime. The US, which partnered with the SDF in the fight against ISIS, hopes this agreement will contribute to long-term stability in the region. However, the move may further strain US relations with Turkey, which considers the SDF linked to a designated terrorist organization.
