JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – Ukraine has accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal brokered in Saudi Arabia, contingent on Russia’s approval, leading to the resumption of US military aid and intelligence sharing with Kyiv. The agreement, reached after eight hours of talks involving Ukrainian and US officials, calls for a cessation of missile, drone, and bomb attacks across the entire front line and in the Black Sea. The deal also includes provisions for the release of prisoners of war and Ukrainian children forcibly relocated to Russia.
The US, represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, immediately reinstated military aid and intelligence sharing, which had been paused following a strained meeting between Presidents Trump and Zelenskyy in February. The joint US-Ukraine statement emphasizes that the ceasefire hinges on Russia’s reciprocal agreement.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia awaits a briefing from the US before commenting on the proposal. However, analysts suggest Russia may seek further concessions, potentially including sanctions relief or limitations on security guarantees for Ukraine. President Trump has indicated a willingness to consider further sanctions on Russia if a peace agreement isn’t reached.
The deal also includes a separate agreement between the US and Ukraine on critical minerals investment. This was originally slated to be signed during the February White House meeting but was delayed.
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism, experts like Keir Giles of Chatham House caution that Russia may use the ceasefire negotiations as leverage for additional demands. The reinstatement of US support is seen as crucial for Ukraine’s continued military capabilities. The coming days will be critical in determining whether Russia accepts the terms and the ceasefire takes effect. US officials have confirmed plans to engage with their Russian counterparts in the near future.
