**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 12, 2025** – Thiruvananthapuram city is geared up for the Attukal Pongala festival on March 12, with the Corporation undertaking extensive preparations focusing on waste management and environmental sustainability. Road maintenance and improvements, including re-tarring and the laying of interlocking tiles, have been completed in the festival area spanning 30 wards. A drainage project behind the temple is also underway.
The Corporation has arranged 40 tanker lorries to provide drinking water, with a dedicated helpline (9446677838) for water and other festival-related services. A crackdown on banned plastic products has resulted in the seizure of over 30 kg of prohibited materials.
This year’s festival emphasizes a green protocol, urging participants to avoid disposable plastics. Over 200 volunteers have conducted door-to-door awareness campaigns promoting the use of steel plates and tumblers. Voluntary organizations involved in food distribution must register via the Corporation’s Smart Trivandrum app and adhere to the plastic-free guidelines.
Post-festival cleanup will involve 3,470 sanitation workers, with collected bricks to be repurposed for housing projects for the extremely poor. Around 350 vehicles are allocated for efficient brick collection. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nakul Deshmukh, briefed police personnel on their duties for the festival.
