**Mumbai, March 12, 2025** – Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane’s endorsement of the new “Malhar” certification for Hindu meat traders has ignited a political firestorm. The certification, launched Monday, aims to identify mutton shops run exclusively by Hindus, claiming to guarantee authenticity and eliminate adulteration.
Mr. Rane, in a statement on Tuesday, explicitly framed Malhar as an alternative to Halal meat, arguing that Halal practices are specific to Islam and not relevant to Hinduism. He stated his support for the initiative, citing the need for Hindu consumers to have a choice outside of Halal-certified options.
This statement has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. Congress MLA Nana Patole condemned Mr. Rane’s remarks, asserting that such divisive language is unbecoming of a minister and suggests a lack of control from the Chief Minister. He called for action to be taken against Mr. Rane for potentially inciting religious conflict.
However, BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay defended Mr. Rane, claiming that concerns exist regarding potential harmful chemicals used in Halal meat processing. While acknowledging personal dietary freedom, Upadhyay expressed support for the Malhar certification and advocated for licensing of all meat shops.
Mr. Rane, promoting the certification via social media, urged Hindus to prioritize Malhar-certified shops, asserting this initiative will empower Hindu youth economically. The controversy highlights rising religious tensions in the state and the politicization of food choices.
