Tue Mar 11 17:35:40 UTC 2025: ## Baloch Separatists Take Hundreds Hostage in Pakistan Train Siege

**QUETTA, Pakistan** – The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group fighting for independence in Balochistan, has claimed responsibility for seizing control of the Jaffar Express train in southwestern Pakistan, taking over 180 passengers hostage, many of whom are Pakistani soldiers. The group has issued an ultimatum to the Pakistani government, demanding the release of all Baloch political prisoners and those who have been forcibly disappeared within 48 hours. Failure to comply, they warn, will result in the execution of the hostages.

The attack, which occurred in the Bolan district, involved the BLA blowing up railway tracks to halt the train within a tunnel before boarding and taking control. Initial reports suggested over 450 passengers were aboard the train traveling from Quetta to Peshawar. While Pakistani security forces have reportedly freed 80 hostages, including women and children, hundreds remain in the BLA’s custody. The BLA claims that six Pakistani military personnel have been killed during the operation.

The Balochistan government has declared a state of emergency and mobilized all available resources to address the crisis. Security forces are currently at the scene, but the BLA has warned against any military intervention, threatening a forceful response.

This incident is the latest in a decades-long insurgency in Balochistan, where separatist groups accuse the Pakistani government of exploiting the region’s rich mineral resources unfairly. The BLA is the most prominent of these groups, and the ongoing conflict highlights the complex geopolitical situation in the region, a strategically important area bordering Iran and Afghanistan and home to the vital Gwadar port.
