**Mumbai, March 8** – Lilavati Hospital, a prestigious medical institution in Mumbai, has filed fresh complaints with the Bandra police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), alleging that its former trustees embezzled a staggering ₹2,100 crore over several years. The hospital’s governing trust, the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, claims the misappropriation, which began as early as 2001, has severely impacted patient care. An initial FIR was filed in July 2024, but a recent forensic audit revealed the full extent of the alleged fraud.
The audit uncovered large-scale fund siphoning, illegal transactions, fraudulent investments, and kickbacks, according to the trust. Parambir Singh, the hospital’s Executive Director and former Mumbai Police Commissioner, stated that the implicated trustees are currently believed to be in Belgium and Dubai. The investigation has taken a bizarre turn with the discovery of eight urns containing human remains – bones and hair – found under the flooring of the former trustees’ office. These items have been submitted as evidence to the police.
The hospital says the ₹2,100 crore figure comprises ₹1,200 crore detailed in the initial FIR, along with further misappropriation discovered during the audit. Separate investigations are underway involving a theft of valuables at the hospital’s Gujarat facility and a ₹500 crore claim filed by the Income Tax department regarding fraudulent expenses.
The trust released a statement expressing outrage at the “gross misconduct and financial misappropriation,” calling it a betrayal of public trust and a threat to the hospital’s mission. They have urged swift action from the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This case is being described as the largest scam ever in India’s medical sector.
